Ceremonial Bill Signing – April 11, 2008
Legislators are often accused of running self-serving legislation. In most cases, the charge is baseless and untrue. However, in the case of HB 269 Scott B. Lundell Military Survivors' Tuition Waiver Amendments, I readily admit to having run a self-serving bill. Why self-serving? Because this bill benefits the families of those who put their lives on the line for me and you and every American every day. This bill specifically benefits the families of service men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, have given their lives to defend me and each of us from those who would destroy our liberty and way of life. I honor the life and service of Lt. Lundell and express my admiration and appreciation to his family. I am grateful for the privilege of sponsoring this bill which offer’s to Lt. Lundell’s children and the children of his fallen brothers and sisters in arms the better life they fought and died to achieve. I applaud my colleagues in the House and Senate for their unanimous and unwavering support of this bill. Thank you!
A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, 'The United States of America ', for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. - author unknown
